Centre Warns Meta: Safe Harbour at Risk? Big Crackdown Over Illegal Content
The Centre has intensified its scrutiny of Meta during the second round of high-level discussions on online safety, deepfakes, algorithmic transparency and platform accountability.
According to government sources, Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw raised concerns over Meta's algorithms, paid content, deepfakes, and compliance with India's IT laws. Sources say Meta acknowledged that it cannot completely eliminate illegal content but assured the government it is strengthening safeguards and continuously improving its systems.
