Bengaluru Tunnel Project Faces Court Scrutiny Over Environmental Concerns, Lalbagh Rock Impact

The ambitious ₹17,000 crore tunnel road project in Bengaluru’s Penluru has sparked legal and political controversy after actor Prakash Belawadi filed a PIL in the Karnataka High Court. The petition challenges the project’s approval, citing the absence of an environmental impact assessment and consultation with key city planning bodies. It also warns of possible damage to the 3,000-million-year-old Lalbagh Rock, a national geological monument. Argued by BJP MP Tejasvi Surya, the case has led to sharp exchanges with Deputy CM DK Shivakumar, who has assured that the historic site will remain unharmed and accused the opposition of obstructing development.
