75 Years of Resistance: The Dalai Lama's Fight For Tibet

Born as Tenzin Gyatso in 1935, His Holiness the 14th Dalai Lama is a spiritual leader and a beacon of hope for millions of Tibetan Buddhists around the world.

At the age of two, he was recognized as the reincarnation of the 13th Dalai Lama, according to Tibetan spiritual beliefs, and was groomed to be the next spiritual and political leader of Tibet.

At the age of 16, His Holiness assumed full political power after Tibet was annexed by Mao Zedong.

The Dalai Lama's 75-year-long struggle-beginning with the Chinese invasion of Tibet in 1950, his escape to India in 1959, and his leadership in exile since then—encapsulates the complex geopolitical issue of Tibet. For China, despite having suppressed Tibet’s unique identity since 1950, the job is only half done. China aims to eliminate any future possibility of a leader who can rally Tibetans worldwide to continue the call for autonomy.
