Union Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw has dismissed rumours about "new" baggage weight limits and checks in Indian Railways. Reports had claimed that the Railways introduced rules to scan baggage at entry and exit gates to ensure compliance with permitted weight limits. They also suggested new electronic machines and scanners would be installed at stations, and passengers would be allowed onto platforms only after baggage clearance.
However, no such new rules have been introduced by Indian Railways. The baggage weight limit rules for train passengers have been in place for "decades".
"Someone picked the already existing rules and did stories on them. It is absolute fake news. The rules have been there for decades," Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw said in a news channel interview, reported Live Mint.
Explained: Existing Luggage Weight Rules In Indian Railways
Currently, luggage is not weighed routinely. However, checks may happen at major stations through scanners or near a parcel office. Train Ticket Examiners (TTEs) and luggage inspectors can stop and inspect baggage that appears excessively large or heavy. Security personnel may also check baggage weight during security checks. Special attention is given to large items like TVs, big suitcases and boxes.

How Much Luggage Is Allowed As Per Existing Railway Rules
- General/Second Class - Up to 35 kg (free)
- Sleeper Class - Up to 40 kg (free)
- Third AC - Up to 40 kg (free)
- Second AC - Up to 50 kg (free)
- First AC - Up to 70 kg (free)
Every passenger will also get an additional allowance of 10 kg and 15kg for First AC. Beyond this, luggage must be booked as a parcel, or fines will apply.
If a passenger carries more than the permitted limit, they are required to book the excess luggage in advance at the parcel office.
If a passenger is found with unbooked excess luggage, the TTE/luggage inspector can impose a fine, depending on the extra weight and distance of travel.
