A luxury polar expedition aboard the MV Hondius - a ship designed for some of the world's most remote and pristine, icy waters - has come under global scrutiny following a deadly hantavirus outbreak. What began as an ambitious voyage across the Atlantic and polar regions has now turned into a complex public health investigation, even as authorities and the ship's operator work to contain the situation and trace its origins.
The incident has not only raised concerns about health safety on long-haul expeditions but has also brought renewed attention to the vessel itself - a state-of-the-art polar cruise ship built for immersive travel in the Arctic and Antarctica.

Hantaviruses are a group of viruses carried by rodents that can cause severe disease in humans. People usually get infected through contact with infected rodents or their urine, droppings or saliva. Infection with hantaviruses can cause a range of illnesses, including severe disease and death.
What Exactly Happened On The Ship?
The outbreak is being linked to a Dutch couple who boarded the ship in Ushuaia, Argentina, on April 1 after travelling across parts of South America, including Chile and Uruguay. Both later died after developing severe respiratory illness associated with the Andes strain of hantavirus.
The husband died on board on April 11, while his wife was evacuated via Saint Helena to Johannesburg, where she later succumbed. A German passenger also died during the outbreak. According to the World Health Organisation (WHO), at least eight individuals, including a Swiss national, are suspected to have contracted the virus, while three additional cases - including two crew members - were evacuated to the Netherlands for treatment and observation.
What Is The Current Status Of The Ship?
Oceanwide Expeditions, the Netherlands-based operator of MV Hondius, confirmed that all symptomatic passengers have now been removed from the vessel. "No symptomatic individuals are present on board," the company said, adding that those affected are receiving medical care.
The ship, which was on a 42-night Atlantic Odyssey voyage, is currently travelling from Cape Verde to the Canary Islands, where around 100 remaining passengers and crew are expected to be monitored before being allowed to return home.

Launched in 2019, the 107-metre (353-foot) MV Hondius is the world's first Polar Class 6-registered expedition cruise ship, specifically built for navigating ice-filled polar waters. The ship features around 80 cabins and suites across multiple categories, ranging from compact 12-square-metre rooms to a 26-square-metre grand suite with a private balcony. Typical voyages range from 10 to 19 days, with itineraries across Antarctica during the northern winter and the Arctic in summer.

A reasonable level of fitness is required, as daily excursions and landings can involve walking and navigating slippery or rocky terrain.
"You must be in good overall health and be able to walk several hours per day," Oceanwide Expeditions wrote on its website, adding, "Remember, you will be travelling in remote areas without access to sophisticated medical facilities, so you must not join this expedition if you have a life-threatening condition or need daily medical treatment."
Passengers are typically experienced or independent travellers, often aged between 45 and 65, although the ship attracts guests ranging from their 30s to 80s.

Expeditions on MV Hondius generally start at around USD 7,800 per person (Rs 7,34,441) and can go up to USD 26,550 (Rs 24,99,926), depending on the itinerary, cabin choice and duration. Payments onboard are usually settled in euros via credit card or cash.

MV Hondius is also positioned as one of the more environmentally conscious vessels operating in polar regions. It uses LED lighting, steam heating systems, biodegradable paints and lubricants, and advanced power management technology to reduce fuel consumption and carbon emissions.
