Ratan Tata's deep and lifelong affection for dogs has long been woven into the Tata legacy, especially within its hospitality spaces. Today, one such four-legged friend, Thumki - the hotel's gentle resident dog - has become an unexpected attraction for travellers from around the world.
In a heartwarming Instagram video that is rapidly gaining popularity, Thumki can be seen trotting confidently through the opulent lobby of Taj Bengal, as if greeting guests in her self-appointed role as the hotel's furry host. Adding to the delight, the caption accompanying the clip is written from Thumki's perspective. It playfully reads: "Taj Bengal - an annexure of Thumki estate, where hoomans come from afar and stay in exchange for some paper that can be used to get treats. The hotel's official Instagram handle joined in the fun, responding warmly: "Always a pleasure to be under such watchful supervision. Treat standards duly noted."
For many travellers, Thumki has become more than a resident dog - she is now part of the hotel's charm, offering a warm, tail-wagging welcome that adds a unique touch to the Taj Bengal experience.

More About Thumki — Taj Bengal's Mascot Dog
Born on the hotel's premises to her mother, Chumki, Thumki's sister reportedly found a home elsewhere. But Thumki chose to stay at the hotel, according to a report by The Better India.
Thumki's daily routine begins at 4:30 AM with what employees fondly describe as the dog's “perimeter rounds”. It involves a brisk inspection of the property, followed by occasional bird-chasing and other activities that keep the campus lively.
Her ongoing care, along with that of other dogs on campus – including safe shelters and vaccinations – has reportedly been supported by Senior Vice President of Operations K Mohanchandran and his wife, Seema, an animal rescuer.
By the time guests start their day, she retreats to her cosy shelter near the parking lot, always respectful of her human visitors. This captivates guests, who come for the dog's smiles and kindness, proving that true hospitality is not about marble floors.

Ratan Tata's Love For Stray Dogs Witnessed In Mumbai's Hotel
Previously, a woman named Rubi Khan documented her experience at the Taj Mahal Hotel in Mumbai. "My curiosity led me to ask the hotel staff about him, and I learned that he has been a part of the hotel since birth. There are strict instructions from Mr Ratan Tata to treat these animals well if they enter the premises," she wrote in a LinkedIn post.
She continued, "What inspired me to write this is the realisation that this place, home to numerous guests ranging from political dignitaries to national and international celebrities, values every being within its walls. The entrance of such a prestigious establishment holds significant importance, and there he was, peacefully sleeping, perhaps unnoticed by many of the guests. Amidst the chaos, he owns the place, finding his sanctuary." Read here to know more.
