Tulip season is here! The perfect time to enjoy vibrant blooms and breathtaking spring scenery at the Indira Gandhi Memorial Tulip Garden, formerly the Model Floriculture Centre in Srinagar, is arriving on March 16. Counted as the largest tulip garden in Asia, it is spread across an area of about 30 hectares.
As spring has already arrived at the Indira Gandhi Memorial Tulip Garden, several pictures and videos of the iconic tourist destination are surfacing on social media. The garden will open its doors to visitors starting March 16, with Chief Minister Omar Abdullah inaugurating it, as announced by officials.
Mathoora Masoom, Director of Floriculture in Kashmir, said, “We will have more than 70 varieties of tulips this year,” reported ANN News. She further revealed that preparations for the opening have been completed and that the department has made efforts to enhance the garden's appeal. “We have tried to improve the experience by adding selfie points and decorative planters so that visitors get a pleasant atmosphere,” she added.
This year, the garden will feature around 1.5 million spring-blooming bulbs, including more than 70 varieties of tulips, which will typically remain in bloom for about 15 to 20 days, depending on weather conditions.
The tulip garden attracts thousands of visitors every year. In 2024, it recorded more than four lakh visitors, including tourists and locals, while in 2023 the garden saw over 3.5 lakh visitors. Last year, however, the tourism sector in Kashmir suffered a major setback following a terror attack on tourists in Pahalgam in April, killing 26 people on the spot.
With the garden's opening this month, the tourism industry is hopeful for strong tourist footfall this year.
