- Seven Stars in Kyushu is an ultra-luxury sleeper train launched in 2013 in Japan
- The train's name reflects the seven Kyushu prefectures it travels through, not luxury ratings
- The train features seven carriages, including lounge, dining, and five sleeper cars
There are trains that simply take you from one place to another, and then there are those that turn the journey itself into a once‑in‑a‑lifetime experience. Japan's Seven Stars in Kyushu belongs firmly in the latter category. Often described as the world's only “seven‑star” train, this ultra‑luxury sleeper service has been redefining rail travel since it began operations in 2013, offering an indulgent blend of comfort, craftsmanship and slow travel at its finest.
How Seven Stars In Kyushu Got Its Name
Built at a cost of around 3 billion yen (approximately Rs 165 crore at the time), the train's name has nothing to do with luxury ratings. Instead, the “seven stars” represent the seven prefectures of Kyushu that the train journeys through: Fukuoka, Saga, Nagasaki, Kumamoto, Oita, Miyazaki and Kagoshima.
As it winds its way across the region, the train passes dramatic landscapes, from active volcanoes to coastal views of the Ariake Sea. The name also symbolises the train's seven carriages - a lounge car, a dining car and five sleeper cars - each designed to reflect refined Japanese aesthetics.

The Only Drawback Of Japan's Seven Stars In Kyushu
The luxury sleeper train features 14 handcrafted wooden suites, both private and gourmet dining areas, and traditional hospitality, elevating rail travel to an alluring experience. The Seven Stars in Kyushu, however, operates for just 3- or 4-day trips, with 10 cabins accommodating 20-30 passengers per trip, providing a very intimate and exclusive journey. Hence, access to bookings requires a lottery system due to overwhelming demand.
