Delhi is set to welcome its first-ever international-standard ice-skating rink, offering the capital a brand-new spot for winter sports and indoor recreation. As per reports, the Delhi Development Authority (DDA) will build the facility at its sports complex in Sector-23, Dwarka. Spanning 4,200 sq m, it will feature a 60m x 30m rink, designed to host ice skating, ice hockey, figure skating, and curling (a sport played on ice where two teams slide stones towards a target area called the "house").

According to DDA officials, the aim is to provide a space that caters to both recreational visitors and professional athletes in Delhi, while also promoting niche winter sports in a city better known for its scorching summers.

What Is The Location Of The New Ice Rink In Delhi?

The ice-skating rink will be located within the cloverleaf of the Dwarka Sports Complex, close to the Dwarka Expressway and the airport tunnel leading to IGI Airport's Terminal 3. It is part of a series of recreational projects initiated under the guidance of Delhi Lieutenant Governor VK Saxena.

A statement from the DDA confirmed that an agency has been finalised through a bidding process, and the site has already been handed over, according to reports. The rink will be developed on a licence fee basis for 15 years, with the selected agency expected to work with international partners via a joint venture or special purpose vehicle (SPV).

Promoting Winter Sports In The National Capital

"With growing interest in niche sports such as ice hockey, ice skating, figure skating, and curling across India, Hon'ble LG had directed DDA officials to explore the possibilities of creating such a facility in Delhi itself. It was observed that spaces in the National Capital for the enthusiasts to train, participate, and for organisers to host events in these sporting activities remain limited, and hence it was decided to create an ice skating rink," the DDA statement said.

An Ice Rink In Delhi For Professional Athletes As Well As The General Public

Back in July, DDA invited design and concept proposals from architects and consultants. "The goal is to create a facility that is both functional for athletes and appealing to the general public. The rink is expected to include spectator seating, changing areas and auxiliary service infrastructure," an official shared.

The DDA's proposal also highlights accessibility for all age groups and abilities, with features to suit different skill levels and community activities. Plans also include exploring digital ticketing, scheduling systems, and interactive displays.

Officials say the project aligns with the vision of transforming Dwarka into a modern, self-sustained sub-city while adding to Delhi's growing portfolio of recreational facilities.
