The place popularly known as Rancho School is the Druk White Lotus School, officially called the Druk Padma Karpo School. Located in Shey village, around 15 km from Leh, the school was featured in the climax of 3 Idiots.
The school was established to give children in Ladakh access to quality education while helping them remain connected to the region's rich cultural traditions rooted in Tibetan Buddhism. The idea was to offer a modern, practical education suited to the 21st century without losing touch with Ladakh's identity.
Its architecture is equally interesting. Ladakh is known for its harsh winters and extreme weather, and the campus was designed with these conditions in mind. How To Reach Rancho School
Druk White Lotus School is located in Shey, roughly a 20 to 30-minute drive from Leh town. You can hire a taxi, rent a scooter or include it in a local sightseeing itinerary.
The best time to visit is between May and September, when Ladakh's weather is more pleasant and the roads are generally accessible. The school is usually open to visitors between 8 am and 6 pm, and there is no entrance fee.
