Sports Minister Kiren Rijiju on Saturday inaugurated the Khelo India State Centre of Excellence (KISCE) for rowing at the Jammu and Kashmir Sports Council Water Sports Academy.

Three trainee athletes at the Water Sports Centre of Sports Authority of India (SAI), undergoing treatment at the Medical College Hospital in Kerala's Alappuzha after they consumed a poisonous fruit in a suicide pact earlier this month, have been discharged from hospital.

Geetha claimed her daughter told her about the harassment by two seniors at the water sports centre of SAI in Alappuzha when she was at the hospital.

In the incident, which happened at the Sports Authority of India's (SAI) Special Area Games Water Sports Centre in Alappuzha last week, one athlete died and three others are serious and undergoing medical treatment.

Four young girl athletes, residents at Sports Authority of India's Water Sports Centre in Vembanad, had on May 6 ate some poisonous fruit on being reprimanded by the centre authorities for consuming beer. One of them, Aparna, died on Thursday.

The suicide of a 15-year-old rower at Kerala's Water Sports Centre brings into focus the issue of women's safety in sports hostels in India. Three more athletes are in critical condition. The case is being investigated by the Kerala Police Crime Branch.
