Ukraine was evacuating thousands of people from flooded areas Wednesday after an attack on a major Russian-held dam unleashed a torrent of water, inundating two dozen villages and sparking fears of a humanitarian disaster.

About 42,000 people were at risk from flooding in Russian and Ukrainian controlled areas along the Dnipro River after a dam collapsed, as the United Nations aid chief warned of "grave and far-reaching consequences."

Ukraine said Russian forces blew up a giant dam in the country's south, unleashing a torrent of floodwater across the battlefield separating their two armies as Kyiv steps up fighting to reclaim occupied territory.

Ukraine on Tuesday said 150 tonnes of engine oil had spilled into the Dnipro river after an attack on the Kakhovka dam and warned of a "negative impact" for the environment.

The Russian-held city of Novaya Kakhovka flooded after a key dam was blown up, Russian news agencies reported.

Video on Tuesday showed a breach in Nova Kakhovka dam, a massive Soviet-era structure, in the Russian controlled part of southern Ukraine. Both Russia and Ukraine have blamed each other for the intentional attack.
