A Tunisian soldier opened fire on comrades near parliament on Monday, killing some of them before being shot dead, but the interior ministry said it was not a "terrorist" attack.

Tunisian President Beji Caid Essebsi said security "failures" had helped facilitate the deadly attack on the country's national museum claimed by the Islamic State group that killed 20 foreign tourists.

Shortly before he and a friend gunned down 20 foreign tourists at Tunisia's Bardo museum, Yassine al-Abidi sat down to a breakfast of olive oil and dates with his family and left for work at his travel agency as usual.

Tunisia's main trade union confederation and other civil society groups called for a silent demonstration today outside the Tunis museum where 17 foreign tourists and two Tunisians were killed.
