Scientists have discovered that a drug, originally used for the treatment of diabetes, can reverse a fatal lung disorder. Using the drug metformin led to a lower fibrotic activity.

Fibrosis, which mostly affects the lungs and hepatic tissues, accounts for up to 45 per cent of deaths in the developed world yet till date no effective therapeutic treatment has been developed, says a recent study.

The appetite-regulating hormone ghrelin could be used to treat an advanced form of peripheral artery disease characterised by pain at rest, non-healing ulcers, and gangrene, say researchers, including one of Indian-origin.

Adults with cystic fibrosis who experience weight loss that does not involve fat tissue, or loss of fat-free mass, have more severe overall disease. Investigators have found that the loss of fat-free mass that is not obvious correlates with increased loss of bone mineral density and systemic inflammatory activity.
