The Supreme Court on Tuesday said it would not interfere with an Odisha government order limiting this year's Rath Yatra to the Puri Jagannath Temple (which will hold the iconic chariot festival on July 12 under strict rules) due to Covid fears.

Puri's famous Rath Yatra started this morning as a large number of priests and temple attendants gathered at the Jagannath Temple, a day after the Supreme Court allowed Odisha to hold the seven-day chariot festival in a restricted fashion amid India's fight against coronavirus.

The Supreme Court has agreed to hear petitions seeking to recall its order putting on hold the annual Lord Jagannath rath yatra this year due to the coronavirus pandemic.

The Odisha government on Sunday said it will take "favourable action" as legally permissible on a request by Gajapati Maharaja Dibyasingha Deb that Lord Jagannath's Rath Yatra, which was stayed by the Supreme Court this year due to the COVID-19 pandemic, be allowed sans congregation of devotees.
