Drug firm Strides Shasun has suspended the production at its API facility at Cuddalore in Tamil Nadu as per government orders.

Board of Directors of both the companies had approved the merger in September last year. The fair trade watchdog, Competition Commission of India (CCI) also gave its approval to the proposed merger in the month of March this year.

Retail investors in India are known to favour midcap stocks over pricier large cap or blue chip stocks. Shares of Strides Arcolab surged nearly 4 per cent to Rs 1,191 at its day's high after the Bangalore-based pharma company reached a deal with Sun Pharmaceutical Industries Ltd to buy two marketing divisions of erstwhile Ranbaxy Laboratories.

Sun Pharma, which last year bought domestic peer Ranbaxy Laboratories Ltd in July, said it may sell low-margin businesses it deemed do not hold long-term value.

The transaction has now achieved closure on completion of closing conditions and statutory and regulatory approvals, Strides Arcolab said in a BSE filing.

The Sensex and Nifty edged up on Thursday, heading for their highest close in two weeks, led by a rise in pharmaceutical stocks after positive comments from broker CLSA boosted investor sentiment.

Drug firm Strides Arcolab on Thursday said its consolidated net profit for the quarter ended June 30, 2015 more than doubled (year-on-year) to Rs 41.9 crore.

Strides Arcolab was in the restricted list of FIIs after foreign holding in the stock touched 49 per cent of total outstanding shares in 2013. As of July 1, 2015 FIIs holding in Strides Arcolab was reduced to 32.4 per cent.

Shares of Strides Arcolab slumped 5.4 per cent to Rs 1,090.80 on the BSE after the government rejected a proposal of the pharmaceutical company.

The approval of shareholders is sought through a postal ballot. The e-voting will commence on June 10 and end on July 9, the company said in a filing to BSE.

Pharmaceuticals firm Strides Arcolab has said its deal with Aspen Pharmacare to buy the latter's Australia assets will help the Indian drug company rebuild its business in that country and also get a product pipeline under development by Aspen.
