A police commando in Sri Lanka committed suicide on Thursday by shooting himself at Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe's official residence in Colombo, officials said.

Sri Lanka on Tuesday imposed fresh curfews and deployed heavily-armed police commandos to a central hill district popular with tourists where riots have left two dead and Muslim homes and businesses in ruins.

Sri Lankan authorities have arrested 12 elite commandos on charges of executing five Tamil students in the eastern city of Trincomalee in 2006 after falsely accusing them to be Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) terrorists.
