Hearing words of praise from Prime Minister Narendra Modi during his radio programme 'Mann Ki Baat' came as a pleasant surprise for 55-year-old Noor Jehan for whom lighting homes in her village by providing solar lamps on rent has now become a way of life.

The Chhattisgarh government has decided to provide 10,000 solar lamps and other necessary electrical equipment, including transformers, to people of flood-ravaged Jammu & Kashmir.

It was almost a year ago that the Trivandrum Tube Corporation (TTC), tucked away in a small by lane at Chalai, decided to go in for solar power.In a bold initiative, the TTC set up solar panels right on top of their roof and started running their computer, five fans, ten tubelights and 10 CFL lamps on solar energy.

Ranbir Kapoor believes in giving generously. The actor recently contributed solar lamps worth lakhs of rupees to the Purani Bazar village in Lakhisarai town of Bihar.

As part of the NDTV Toyota Greenathon, Shah Rukh Khan sponsored five villages.

In the last two months, solar power lamps have changed the lives of the hundred-odd families in Guwada Gujran.
