Bahrain released at dawn today a Sunni opposition leader who was jailed more than four years for involvement in Shiite-led anti-government protests, his party announced.

A court in Bahrain has handed down sentences of up to life imprisonment against 57 Shiites accused of plotting attacks against police and other targets, state media reported.

Bahrain, home to the US Navy's Fifth Fleet, has been rocked by unrest since security forces crushed Shiite-led protests in 2011 demanding a constitutional monarchy and an elected prime minister.

The group said the malware mostly targeted individuals in Qatif district in Eastern Province, which has been the site of sporadic Shiite-led protests since February 2011.

Hundreds protested on Tuesday near Bahrain's international airport as Formula One teams began arriving in the Sunni-ruled kingdom ahead of a Grand Prix hit by a Shiite-led uprising, witnesses said.

Bahrain will dismiss charges against some people detained during crackdowns against Shiite-led protests and allow compensation to prisoners abused by security forces, the Gulf nation's king said today in a nationally broadcast speech.
