In spite of falling commodity prices, Vedanta Ltd, formerly known as Sesa Sterlite, has come out with robust results in a volatile market helped by cost control and higher productivity, the company said on Wednesday.

Mining firm Sesa Sterlite said it aims to achieve its target of 5.5 million tonnes (MT) iron ore exports by March next year.

Cairn had on July 23, 2014 disclosed in an investor presentation that it had extended $1.25 billion of loan from its cash pile to Sesa Sterlite, which was later renamed Vedanta Ltd.

As Vedanta Ltd, formerly known as Sesa Sterlite, gets down to resuming mining operations in Goa after three years, the company's iron ore business CEO Kishore Kumar said the mining "cake has shrunk".

Anil Agarwal-led Vedanta India, which changed the name from Sesa Sterlite last month, is a promoter in Cairn India.

The company, which was earlier known as Sesa Sterlite, had reported a net profit of Rs 1,621.55 crore for the same period in the previous fiscal, it said in a filing to the BSE.

Metals and mining conglomerate Sesa Sterlite on Wednesday said it has changed its name to Vedanta Ltd to better align with its international identity - Vedanta Resources.

Sesa and other companies in Goa, however, are unlikely to be able to make any significant export as low world prices have made low-quality ore from India uncompetitive.

With the withdrawal of the suspension order, the Goa government said the mining industry will resume operations immediately.

The government has approved a proposal from Odisha to allocate a bauxite deposit with reserves of over 150 million tonnes to the state mining company, a move likely to help companies like Sesa Sterlite Ltd that are banking on the raw material to fire their aluminium smelters in the state.

The Nifty was above its important psychological level of 8,700 led by buying in heavyweight stocks like ICICI Bank, State Bank of India, Sesa Sterlite and Tata Steel.

The Vedanta Group company's scrip rose by 2.89 per cent to Rs 223.70 on the BSE.

Sesa Sterlite is a subsidiary of Vedanta Resources Plc, UK, which is listed on the London Stock Exchange and represents the Vedanta Group. Promoters hold 59.53 per cent stake in Sesa Sterlite.
