Sea Cucumber Seized

The Indian Coast Guard today said it has recovered 600 kg of banned sea cucumber from a boat off Ramanathapuram.

A team of Indian Coast Guard recovered 200 bags of sea cucumbers, weighing 2,000kgs, which were suspected to be smuggled to Sri Lanka.

Dried sea horses, pangolin scales and other marine species worth 7 crore were seized today in Chennai by customs officials who have also detained two smugglers.

More than 350 kilograms of sea cucumber, an endangered marine species, were seized and four persons arrested for allegedly hoarding them for smuggling near Tuticorin on Sunday, police said.

A large quantity of sea cucumber, an endangered species under the Wildlife Protection Act, has been seized from a fishing hamlet near Nagapattinam and one person arrested on the charge of stocking it with a plan to smuggle it to Sri Lanka.

In the second such seizure within a week, 70 kg of sea cucumber, an endangered marine species, was recovered on Thursday, forest officials said. Forest officials on routine duty at Devipattinam spotted a group of people standing beside a motorcycle. On seeing the officials, the men ran away, leaving the sea cucumber and motorcyle.
