Visva-Bharati authorities on Sunday wrote to President Droupadi Murmu, seeking her intervention for returning of a road lined by heritage buildings on the central university's campus from the West Bengal government.

A court in West Bengal's Birbhum district on Tuesday stayed an eviction notice by Visva-Bharati served on Nobel laureate Amartya Sen asking him to vacate 0.13 acre (5,500 square feet) of land which the university claims he is illegally occupying.

Students of Visva-Bharti at Santiniketan, who have been staging a sit-in over rustication of three peers for more than a week, began a relay hunger strike on Sunday.

With the Calcutta High Court on Friday banning demonstrations anywhere within 50 metres of the Visva Bharati campus at Santiniketan, the central university announced immediate resumption of admissions to undergraduate and postgraduate courses, citing the interim order.

Confirming that Vice-Chancellor Bidyut Chakraborty is “under siege” due to the ongoing agitation by a section of students, Visva-Bharati University on Monday temporarily suspended the admission process for undergraduate and postgraduate courses, a notice said.

The two exams are equivalent to the final board tests of Classes 10 and 12 for the Visva-Bharati students. Visva-Bharati offers pre-degree (10+2) courses in science and humanities through the two schools under the university.

While addressing the convocation of Visva Bharati University, Prime Minister Modi asked its students to help farmers and artisans in villages adopted by the institution find global markets for their products. As many as 2,535 students received their degrees at the convocation today.

“For Gurudev Tagore, Visva-Bharati was not only an institute for imparting knowledge. It is an attempt to lift Indian culture to the top,” PM Modi said in his address.
