Sagarmala Initiative

Government on Monday said it will try to implement projects worth over Rs 5 lakh crore under the ambitious Sagarmala initiative before completion of its tenure in May 2019.

To give a push to port-led development under the ambitious Sagarmala project, government on Thursday announced incorporation of Sagarmala Development Company with Rs 1,000 crore as initial authorised share capital.

India's 12 major ports saw capacity addition of a record 94 million tonne (MT) last fiscal year that ended on March 31, earning a profit of Rs 4,268 crore on the back of various government initiatives, Union Minister Nitin Gadkari said on Saturday.

As a new year beckons, the government plans to weed out several archaic rules, some of which are over 100 years old, relating to shipping sector and also harness inland waterways, lighthouses and islands as new growth drivers of the Indian economy.
