Respiratory Infection In Bengal

Members of the West Bengal Commission for Protection of Child Rights (WBCPCR) visited a hospital in Kolkata on Wednesday as child deaths due to acute respiratory infection (ARI) continued in the state, officials said.

Seven children have died due to respiratory infection in West Bengal, a senior health official said.

Five children have died in West Bengal due to respiratory infections in different hospitals in the city in the last 24 hours fuelling fears of growing incidences of Adenovirus in the state, health department official said today.

Adenovirus leads to flu-like symptoms including common cold, fever, sore throat and bronchitis.

With 130 new cases West Bengal witnessed the highest single-day spike in coronavirus cases, while nine more people died of the respiratory infection in the last 24 hours taking the toll in the state to 88, the health department said on Friday.

West Bengal's premier facility, the Kolkata Medical College Hospital was today designated a COVID-19 hospital and will start functioning from May 7. The hospital has 500 beds to be assigned to both COVID and SARI (Severe Acute Respiratory Infection) patients. This is the 68th dedicated COVID-19 hospital in the state.
