A man from Maharashtra's Thane city lost nearly Rs 5 lakh in cyber fraud after he relied on the results of a Google search to seek refunds for his cancelled trip to an African nation, an official said today.

Airlines will have to refund money collected from tickets that were cancelled following the coronavirus induced lockdown without any cancellation charge, the Supreme Court said today. The judgement applies for bookings made for both domestic and international tickets during the period.

The Supreme Court on Tuesday issued notice to the Central government on a plea filed by Air Passengers Association of India seeking a refund on tickets for flights cancelled due to the ongoing COVID-19 lockdown.

The Supreme Court Monday sought responses from the Centre and DGCA on a plea seeking directions to airlines operating domestic and international fights in India to refund full amount collected for tickets due to cancellation of flights in wake of the lockdown and restrictions imposed to contain COVID-19 pandemic.

The Civil Aviation Ministry today said that the passengers who had booked flight tickets during the first phase of lockdown for travel up to May 3 must get a full refund from the airlines without any cancellation charges if they ask for it.

If a cancellation is made within 24 hours of booking a flight ticket, no charges should be imposed on passengers, the government proposed on Tuesday.
