More than 340 mobile phones have been found in different jails in Delhi in the last two-and-a-half months, official data showed on Thursday. Director General (Prisons) Sanjay Baniwal told reporters that the jail authorities found 348 mobile phones in two-and-a-half months.

The Uttar Pradesh government said it will act tough against inmates found using cell phones inside prisons, adding that they will face a jail term of three to five years or a fine ranging from Rs 20,000 to Rs 50,000 or both.

An undertrial prisoner at Tihar Jail has accused the prison staff of "using him" to the pass around mobile phones to other inmates. The prison officials, however, have refuted the allegation.

The Uttar Pradesh government has prohibited the use of mobile phones in jails for officers and employees. Jail superintendents and jailors, however, are allowed to use their closed user group numbers.
