NCP chief Sharad Pawar on Wednesday blamed the central government's policies for the spiralling prices of onion and said he would speak to the Centre about the stock limit imposed on the commodity traders.

In a sudden move, the central government's Department of Commerce on Monday banned "with immediate effect" export of onions as its average trade price in the country's biggest onion market in Maharashtra's Lasalgaon touched Rs 30/kg - double of what it was in March.

The government on Thursday reduced minimum export price (MEP) of onion to $150 a tonne from $350 to boost shipments and check sharp fall in domestic price, which has led to farmers protesting in producing states.

The exorbitant prices of the humble onion have provoked a string of dark jokes on social media and drawing room conversations, but Delhi Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit is not laughing.

A former IMF chief economist, Rajan took over at the RBI on September 4 in the middle of India's worst economic crisis in 20 years. He will announce his first monetary policy review on Friday.

Supplies are also likely to improve as small quantities of imported onions have arrived, while outward shipments have slowed after a minimum export price was reimposed, he said.
