Keeping its promise of honouring "unsung heroes", the government today announced Padma Shri awards for personalities who served the poor, set up free schools and popularised tribal arts globally.

Former Comptroller and Auditor General of India Vinod Rai, actor Rajinikanth, spiritual guru Sri Sri Ravishankar and tennis player Sania Mirza are on the list of 112 Padma awardees whose names were announced on Monday by the government.

Renowned Telugu filmmaker Bapu, also an acclaimed artist, painter, cartoonist and illustrator, passed away in Chennai on Sunday following a brief illness. He was 80.

Poonia, who was conferred the Arjuna Award in 2010 and Padma Sri Award in 2011, will begin her medal hunt at the 2014 Asian Games in Incheon, South Korea.

MSDhoni received the Padma Sri award from government officials after missing the opportunity to take it from President Pratibha Patil earlier this year.
