Opposition On Notes Ban

Law Minister Kiren Rijiju on Monday accused the Congress of attempting to "twist" the issue of demonetisation and "misinform" people after opposition leaders played down the Supreme Court verdict upholding the government's 2016 decision.

The Supreme Court's verdict on demonetisation deals only with the decision-making process, and it is "misleading" to say that the court has upheld the notes ban, the Congress said today.

The Congress and other opposition parties on Tuesday released a video purportedly showing a "BJP leader" exchanging old notes after demonetisation on a commission of 40 per cent, but did not vouch for the authenticity of the 30-minute footage.

The sudden move to ban high-value currency notes in 2016 was not a "jhatka" (shock) as people with black money were warned a year earlier, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said in an interview to news agency ANI on Tuesday, defending demonetisation.
