A doctor in Odisha's Sambalpur district has opened a "One Rupee" clinic to provide treatment to the poor and underprivileged people.

A 106-year-old woman from Maharashtra's Thane district defeated COVID-19 and was discharged from hospital on Sunday with doctors and nurses giving her a warm farewell.

The woman was travelling from Nerul to Panvel when she experienced labour pain. Doctors and staff members of Railway's One Rupee Clinic promptly came to her rescue and helped her deliver the child.

The Central Railway had introduced the concept one-rupee clinic at its major stations where doctors provide consultation at a charge of Re 1.

It was on her way to Mumbai that a 20-year-old pregnant woman started experiencing labour pains on a train ride early in the morning today. Thanks to a two-year old court order, the woman, Pooja Chauhan, got all the help at hand at that time.

The fast local, headed for Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus in Mumbai, was somewhere near Dadar when Salma Shaikh went into labour. On seeing her condition, fellow passengers tried to calm her down and informed the railway police. A doctor and support staff from One Rupee Clinic on Dadar station rushed to help her.

After opening 24-hour Emergency Medical Rooms (EMRs) and One Rupee clinics at six stations of the Central Railway (CR), medical firm Magicdil Health has got consent to open similar facilities at five metro stations. These five metro stations fall on the Ghatkopar- Vesrova stretch of the rapid transport system, the city-based company said.
