As many as 801 sanitation workers have died while cleaning sewers in the country since 1993, said Manhar Valjibhai Zala, chairperson, National Commission for Safai Karamcharis (NCSK), Thursday.

The National Commission for Safai Karamcharis has ensured payment of mandatory compensation of Rs 10 lakh to 100 families whose members died as a result of manual scavenging, NCSK chairman Manhar Valjibhai Zala said Thursday.

The National Commission for Safai Karamcharis Wednesday directed the district magistrate (west) to give a compensation of Rs 10 lakh to the family of each of the five people dead due to suffocation while cleaning a septic tank at a housing complex in Moti Nagar area in Delhi, officials said.
