Maharashtra Chemists Strike

Maharashtra Food and Civil Supplies minister Girish Bapat has said the current law is inadequate to check the sale of medicines without doctors' prescription but asserted that the government is committed to check the malpractice.

Around 55,000 retail chemists and pharmacists in Maharashtra joined the day-long nationwide strike on Wednesday called by All India Organisation of Chemists and Druggists or AIOCD, demanding a ban on online sale of medicines, an official said.

Chemists in Maharashtra have decided to observe a three-day shut down from today against the "draconian" interpretation of the Drug & Cosmetics Act, 1940 by the FDA.

Around 7.5 lakh chemists across India on Friday observed a one-day strike against the new drug policy and its impact on traders. However, in some states, pharmacy shops near major hospitals remained open, providing relief to patients.

Following intervention by the Chief Minister Prithviraj Chavan, Maharashtra State Chemists & Druggists Association (MSCDA) on Monday evening called off the proposed three-day strike, which was to start from midnight on Monday.
