A US patient with leukemia has become the first woman and the third person to date to be cured of HIV after receiving a bone marrow transplant from a donor who was naturally resistant to the virus that causes AIDS, researchers reported on Tuesday.

The common cancers of childhood are blood cancers (leukemia), lymph cancers (lymphoma), brain cancers, muscle/bone cancers (sarcoma) and tumours of kidney (Wilms tumour)

AML is a rapidly progressing cancer that crowds out normal cells in the bone marrow and bloodstream, resulting in low numbers of normal blood cells and a continuous need for transfusions, reports Xinhua news agency.

"Symptoms of leukemia can be a variable spectrum. But there are certain common symptoms of this disease which are persistent in 95% of the patients," says Dr. Gaurav Kharya.

The Kerala High Court on Monday summoned notice to the Regional Cancer Centre(RCC) in Thiruvananthapuram as well as the State government in response to a writ petition on behalf of the father of a nine-year-old girl, a leukemia patient who had earlier tested positive for HIV after getting a series of blood transfusion at the RCC.
