The government is trying to get Karmapa Ogyen Trinley Dorje return to India from his US visit after repeated insistence of the Buddhist community. The 32 year-old Karmapa had gone to US in May 2017 and was expected to return last year only, but extended his stay. This is the longest period he has stayed abroad.

A senior Tibetan lama at the centre of a long-running row over one of Buddhism's most important titles has abandoned the monkhood altogether after marrying a childhood friend in India, his office said Thursday.

The 26-year old who is the current embodiment of Karmapa Lama, a sacred role in Tibetan Buddhism, was implicated by the police in December 2011, following a seizure of $1.4 million from his monastery in Himachal Pradesh earlier in the year.
