Timothy Ray Brown, the first person known to have been cured of HIV when he had a unique type of bone marrow transplant, has died in California after relapsing with cancer, his partner said.

Scientists, including one of Indian-origin, have discovered a human protein that forces latent HIV out of hiding, and poisons the virus on its way out, an advance that could help cure the disease and prevent relapse when medication is stopped.

Scientists are now better able to predict how quickly the HIV virus will return after individuals stop treatment, thanks to the discovery of new immune system biomarkers by researchers at the University of New South Wales (UNSW), Australia, and the University of Oxford.

A US girl born with the AIDS virus and in remission for years despite stopping treatment now shows signs that she still harbors HIV - and therefore is not cured.
