Himachal Students Swept Away

Less than a month after 24 students of an engineering college from Hyderabad were swept away in Himachal Pradesh's Beas river, a US daily on Wednesday blamed the "sand mafia" for the tragedy.

Rescuers today recovered the bodies of two more students of a Hyderabad-based engineering college who, along with their 22 other friends and a co-tour operator, were swept away in the Beas river on June 8, taking the number of bodies traced so far to 19.

As I walked into Hotel River Bank in this sleepy town of Mandi, despite the scrum of cameras, reporters and politicians, there was a sense of grave quiet. This is where 24 students from Hyderabad are staying while they wait for news of their classmates.

A fifth student's body was discovered by rescuers this morning who are searching the River Beas in Mandi where 24 students were washed away after water was released from a dam, allegedly without warning.
