Gujarat Helmet Rule

In yet another relaxation in stringent provisions of the amended Motor Vehicles Act (MVA), the Gujarat government on Wednesday relaxed compulsory helmet rule in areas under municipal corporations and municipalities, but the headgear will remain mandatory for two-wheeler riders on highways and in rural areas.

The Gujarat government on Tuesday reduced fine amounts for breaking traffic rules, stipulated in the new Motor Vehicles Act passed recently.

The centre's new law imposing hefty fines on traffic violations has worried the states. Both Congress-ruled Rajasthan and BJP-ruled Gujarat, are looking for ways to lighten the rules that now call for a Rs 1000 fine for riding a two-wheeler without helmet and jailing of parents when underage teens take the wheels.

Celebrities are time and again brought under the radar for flouting rules but never fined; something which would otherwise be imposed on regular citizens.
