The Gujarat High Court on Wednesday said the steps taken by the state government to contain the spread of COVID-19 was "not enough" in the present situation and further restrictions need to be imposed while keeping in mind the welfare of people.

The Gujarat High Court pulled up the state government today over the COVID-19 situation in the state and problems being faced by citizens, saying the reality is contrary to what the government claims.

The Gujarat High Court on Sunday initiated a suo motu PIL over the coronavirus situation in the state, observing that media reports on the pandemic indicate that the state was heading towards a "health emergency of sorts".

The Supreme Court today stayed a Gujarat High Court order asking those not wearing masks to do community work in COVID-19 wards. However, it also said that such persons violate others' fundamental rights and that authorities must make sure pandemic protocols were strictly followed.

"Worse things will happen in December if states aren't well prepared," the Supreme Court warned today as it sought status reports from Delhi, Gujarat, Maharashtra and Assam in two days over the spike in coronavirus cases in these states.

A four-member team of the central government will be on a visit to Gujarat on Friday to review the coronavirus situation in the state and to provide necessary guidance.
