A bill that would replace an ordinance through which tax rates on various motor vehicles were hiked to a maximum of 25 per cent under the Goods and Services Tax or GST, will come up for consideration in the Lok Sabha today.

Moving ahead with its plans for a July 1 rollout of the landmark tax reform - a national Goods and Services Tax or GST - Finance Minister Arun Jaitley today said that the four main rates or slabs of the new tax are necessary. All the four bills supporting the GST have been passed in parliament.

The BJP cost India 12 lakh crores by forcing a delay in the crucial Goods and Services Tax reform, the Congress alleged today in parliament. Now, however, it is the Congress which is critical of what is being described as India's biggest tax reform since independence, with Veerappa Moily describing it as " not a game-changer but only a baby step."

Finance Minister Arun Jaitley, in what was described by the Speaker as "Arun ji's classroom", made a strong pitch for the GST or Goods and Services Tax in parliament today, opening a seven-hour debate on bills to enable India's biggest tax reform. He called GST a unique experience" with shared sovereignty for the centre and states.

Congress leader Veerappa Moily, speaking during the debate on GST bills, dared all members of the Rajya Sabha today to quit "if they have some pride left". Mr Moily's counsel is based on the Congress premise that the government has demonstrated its determination to exclude the Rajya Sabha from any say in legislation.
