Prison authorities in Goa have started a probe into a series of alleged assaults on undertrials, some of them foreign nationals booked in narcotics possession cases, by jail guards, a top official said today.

The newly inaugurated prison in Colvale village of Goa will be soon operational after India Reserve Battalion (IRB) takes over the outward security of this jail, a top official said today.

Prison authorities on Sunday seized a mobile phone during a surprise inspection of the cell in which Tehelka editor-in-chief Tarun Tejpal is lodged at the Sada sub-jail in Goa's Vasco city.
