Goa Chief Minister Pramod Sawant on Wednesday handed over the Indian citizenship certificate to a 78-year-old Pakistani Christian under the Citizenship (Amendment) Act, making him the first such person from the coastal state.

Days after the government prescribed steep penalties for traffic offenders under an amended law, a number of states have decided to slash them in their respective jurisdictions on "humanitarian" grounds. Ironically, leading the charge are BJP-ruled states.

The minister, however, claimed that non-recruitment of new staff members in various ranks had not hampered the functioning of courts in the state as workforce was deployed on a temporary basis to make up for the gaps.

Goa has just got a new law and it is being called a "super law." Environmentalists say the amended town planning act overrides any other land regulation in the state and has the power to destroy Goa's 33 per cent forest cover.

Goa is mooting a law to regulate the massage parlours in the state and empower senior police officers to conduct searches at spas, Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar told the assembly today.

Tarun Tejpal's lawyers sought bail for him by saying that "He is not running away, will face the trial."

The additional cases will generate revenue of Rs 25,000 crore, ministry officials said, excluding the Rs 20,000 crore the government hopes to recover from British telecom operator Vodafone group. Euro Pacific Security and Pan Asia have already paid the taxes as per the IT Department’s tax demand, ministry officials said.
