Gau Raksha Dal

Satish Kumar, head of the Punjab unit of the self-styled cow protection group Gau Raksha Dal was arrested by Patiala police in Uttar Pradesh last night. Sources said he was arrested from Vrindavan where he was hiding.

After Prime Minister Narendra Modi spoke out twice on the weekend against "fake cow protectors", the Punjab Police have registered an FIR or first information report against Satish Kumar, who heads the state unit of a group called the Gau Raksha Dal.

A man allegedly smuggling cattle died in Haryana's Karnal district during a shootout early on Thursday morning. Three members of a local Gau Raksha Dal (Save cow campaigners), have been detained by the police in the case. The deceased is yet to be identified.

Despite the outcry over Dadri - which exposed the deadly potential of cattle vigilantism - and the government's warnings, there appears to be no change in the attitude of these groups, nor any visible attempts to rein them in.

The Gau Raksha Dal has gained notoriety for posting videos online of its vigilante-style attacks on trucks, mainly in Punjab and Haryana, for allegedly carrying cattle for slaughter.
