Fine For Drinking On Beach

The Goa Tourism department has decided to impose a fine of Rs 10,000 for drinking on beaches after several areas were found littered with bottles after the new year celebrations, an official said on Friday.

The Goa Assembly on Thursday passed amendments to the Goa Tourist Place (Protection and Maintenance) Act, 2001, prohibiting drinking alcohol and cooking in public places including beaches and breaking of glass bottles in public.

Tourism Minister Manohar Ajgaonkar also said that the amendment would be tabled for passing in the upcoming session of the state Assembly which begins on January 29.

Bombarded with complaints about drinking of alcohol on beaches, roads and highways and in public areas by tourists, the Goa government on Monday introduced a new amendment to state excise law which recommends identification of 'no alcohol consumption zones' across Goa.
