Bhopal: Court summons Dow Chemicals in gas tragedy case

Chief Judicial Magistrate (CJM), Bhopal, Pankaj Maheshwari issued a notice to Dow Chemicals on Friday to appear before the court on July 4 and present its stand with regard to the Bhopal gas leak disaster of December 1984.

London Olympics chiefs said on Friday they were willing to meet Indian activists who have called for Dow Chemical to be dropped as a sponsor of the 2012 Games because of the 1984 Bhopal disaster.

Dow Chemicals will remain a sponsor for the London Olympics. Chief Executive of the Games, Paul Deighton, categorically said on Friday that the resignation of the Ethics Committee's chief Meredith Alexander will have no bearing on Dow sponsorship. In fact he added that it is India's responsibility to clean up the gas tragedy site in Bhopal.

The Indian Olympic Association on Monday ruled out the possibility of the country boycotting next year's London Olympics but said that the apex sports body would convey the opposition from certain quarters here on Dow Chemical being one of the sponsors of the Games.
