A BJP delegation today called on Delhi Lt Governor Najeeb Jung to complain against the city government's introduction of the VAT Amendment Bill, increased expenditure on advertisements and publicity, and denial of information to RTI activists.

A bill that will allow the Delhi cabinet to raise Value Added Tax (VAT) on commodities like fuel, liquor, tobacco and soft drinks by upto 30% was passed in the assembly today amid protests by the opposition BJP members.

In tune with its efforts to ensure uniformity in Value Added Tax with neighbouring states, Delhi government tabled an amendment bill in the Assembly for bringing flexibility in fixing VAT on liquor, tobacco, aerated drinks and certain other items.
