Delhi government has shown lack of sensitivity over protecting the environment, the Supreme Court said while rapping it for granting permission to the DDA to chop 422 trees in the Southern Ridge's reserve forest area to construct a road.

The Supreme Court on Friday asked the Delhi Police not to harass a city resident who has filed a contempt plea against the DDA over "illegal" tree-felling in the Ridge forest.

The Supreme Court rapped the Delhi Development Authority (DDA), the AAP government and contractor for "not apprising" Lieutenant Governor Vinai Kumar Saxena about the requirements before ordering the felling of trees.

The battle between the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) and the BJP over who was responsible for "illegal" felling of trees in Delhi's ridge area intensified on Friday after the BJP alleged Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal gave the green light in January.

Making its intention of getting to the root of the matter clear, the Supreme Court on Wednesday rapped not only the Delhi Development Authority but also the Delhi government for illegal tree cutting in the ridge area.

Coming down heavily on the Delhi Development Authority (DDA) for the felling of trees in the capital's Ridge area, the Supreme Court today said it cannot brush aside "brazen acts" that lead to the destruction of the environment.

Days after the Supreme Court asked Delhi and 3 other states not to give any new mining permissions in the Aravallis without its permission, the court has come down hard on the Delhi Development Authority for tree cutting in the Ridge.

The Ridge is an extension of the Aravalli hill range in Delhi and is a rocky, hilly and forested area.
