Dance Bar Bill

The Maharashtra Assembly has unanimously passed the Dance Bar Regulation Bill, which has provisions for stringent actions against the violators.

They may quibble and oppose each other on every other issue, but when it comes to banning dance bars, Maharashtra's politicians stand shoulder to shoulder. A week after the Supreme Court had ordered that dance bars be given licenses March 15, the ruling BJP-Shiv Sena government has decided to bring another bill to stop them reopening.

Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis today said a Bill will be introduced during the budget session of the state Legislature beginning in Mumbai tomorrow, to stop the dance bars from reopening.

Maharashtra Assembly today passed a Bill to extend the ban on dance performances at high-end hotels and other public premises, bringing to end a protracted legal battle of the Goverment over the issue which had generated a heated debate on moral policing.

The Maharashtra government which was left red-faced after the Supreme Court quashed a ban on dance bars in the state, said in Mumbai today that it would bring an amended legislation to ban them during the Monsoon Session of the state legislature, which is set to begin from June 2.
