Egyptian security forces killed two suspected Islamist militants during clashes in the upscale Cairo district of Maadi on Wednesday, security sources said.

Egypt's army said on Wednesday more than 100 militants and 17 soldiers were killed in simultaneous attacks on military checkpoints in North Sinai, in the most sustained fighting of its kind in years in the restive province.

The Port Said riot in 2012, which claimed 74 lives, broke out when fans of home team Al-Masry and Cairo's Al-Ahly clashed after a premier league match between the two clubs.

The Egyptian move follows 19 deaths when police and football supporters clashed before a top-of-the-table league fixture between Cairo clubs Zamalek and ENPPI.
