Bribe Takers

Parliament today passed a bill to amend the 1988 anti-graft law by seeking to punish bribe-givers for the first time along with the bribe takers, as the Lok Sabha gave its nod to it.

The government today said that the "identity of the bribe takers" in the AgustaWestland scam, which involved an order for 12 helicopters for the use of VVIPs, must be established. The ruling BJP says that Sonia Gandhi and other top Congress leaders have been implicated in the scam - a point the Congress disputed in Parliament.

BJP today used the conviction of Italian officials linked to the VVIP chopper scam to target the Congress and asked the then defence minister AK Antony to name the party leaders allegedly involved in the scandal.
