Bofors Kickbacks

The CBI probe into the Bofors case pertaining to the alleged Rs 64 crore kickbacks in the purchase of Swedish artillery guns will continue, officials said Thursday.

Indicating a resurrection of the decades-old Bofors arms scandal involving allegations of kickbacks to then prime minister Rajiv Gandhi and other top officials when the Congress was in power, the CBI has told a group of lawmakers it can reopen investigation into the case.

The Bofors arms case involving allegations of kickbacks to then prime minister Rajiv Gandhi and other top officials should be reopened and the CBI should ask for the government's permission to go to the Supreme Court for it, a group of MPs said at a meeting yesterday.

Congress today backed the reported controversial remarks of President Pranab Mukherjee on Bofors issue to a Swedish daily and said allegations of kickbacks were levelled by opposition parties to defame the then Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi.

India has objected to a Swedish newspaper printing the comments of President Pranab Mukherjee on the Bofors controversy centred on whether politicians took kickbacks in exchange for buying artillery guns made in Switzerland.

Rejecting charges that it was not proactive in probing allegations of kickbacks in the Rs 3600 crore VVIP chopper deal, Government on Wednesday said it would act only according to the law and not to please the Opposition in this case.

The CBI said in court today that its decision to drop its case against Ottavio Quattrocchi stands.
